Understanding Sequence Stratigraphy

• Sequence stratigraphy is a way of understanding the stratigraphic record, or sedimentary rock strata, in terms of their depositional settings.
• It entails analyzing sedimentary strata in order to discover and explain changes in depositional settings as well as the processes that impacted them.

• The purpose of sequence stratigraphy is to comprehend a given area's geological history by examining sedimentary rock strata and their connections. This allows geologists to recreate the previous conditions and events that shaped the Earth's surface.

Classifying Sequence Stratigraphy

There are two forms of sequence stratigraphy: lithostratigraphy and chronostratigraphy.

1. Lithotratigraphy

• Lithostratigraphy examines the physical properties of sedimentary strata, such as composition, texture, and color.
• It is based on the assumption that layers with similar physical properties were formed in similar surroundings at the same time.

2. Chronostratigraphy

• Chronostratigraphy, on the other hand, is determined by the ages of the sedimentary strata. Absolute dating procedures are used to identify the age of the strata and their connection to one another.
• The two forms of sequence stratigraphy are combined to provide a more complete picture of the Earth's sedimentary strata.
