Macrostates in Statistical Physics

  • In statistical mechanics, the macrostate is something big is called a macro. In the field of statistical physics, a macrostate is a system with a lot of particles.
  • Macrostate is used in physics to describe a gas system inside a cylinder or any other object. This is because there are a lot of molecules in this gas stream.

 

Microstates in Statistical Physics

  • There are different ways to order the particles in a macrostate.
  • Every set-up is a microstate.
  • The number of microstates in a system is equal to the number of ways that its pieces can be put together.
  • This is easy to understand with this physics example of a macrostate and a microstate.
  • In statistical mechanics, microstates are very important.
  • We can figure out how a thermodynamic system works by looking at its big-picture factors, such as its volume, temperature, and pressure.
  • However, we can't know some features of the system, like its entropy, unless we know how the tiny particles inside it move.
