OCEANOGRAPHY
Oceanography dives deep, exploring the physics, chemistry, and life within the vast blue expanse

Oceanography
- Oceanography, which is also sometimes called oceanology, is the scientific study of the seas. This very important Earth science subject looks at things like ecosystem dynamics, waves, ocean currents, and geophysical fluid dynamics.
- It also looks at the geology of the bottom and plate tectonics, as well as the flow of different chemical substances and physical properties inside and outside the ocean.
- Oceanographers study many fields, such as astronomy, biology, chemistry, climate, geography, geology, hydrology, weather, and physics, to learn more about the oceans around the world.
- Palaeoceanography is the study of how the seas have changed over time.
- A scientist who studies the oceans, like marine geology, physics, chemistry, and biology, is called an oceanographer.
Modern Oceanography
- People in the seas only knew about the top few fathoms of water and a small part of the bottom, mostly in shallow areas.
- It was almost impossible to know how deep the ocean was. In the middle of the 1800s, the British Royal Navy tried to make a map of the world's coasts.
- They only knew that most of the ocean was very deep, but they didn't know anything else.
- Exploration of the polar areas and Africa sparked interest in people and scientists alike, as did the secrets of the oceans that had not been explored yet.
- In the late 1800s, people and organizations from other Western countries, as well as a few individuals, went on research trips. In 1882, the Albatros, the first oceanographic ship built just for that reason, set sail. In the year 1893, Fridtjof Nansen let his ship, Fram, get stuck in Arctic ice.
- He could then collect data on the oceans, weather, and stars from a set point in time.
