DEEPEST OCEANIC TRENCH
Deepest Scars on Earth: Oceanic trenches plunge miles down, formed by tectonic plates colliding and sinking.
Deepest oceanic trenches
The following are the deepest known oceanic trenches on Earth:
The Challenger Deep
- The Challenger Deep, located in the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean, is the deepest known location in the world's seas, reaching a maximum depth of around 10,925 metres (35,843 feet).
- It is named after the HMS Challenger, which conducted the trench's first scientific investigation in 1875.
Hossack Deep
- Hossack Deep, located in the Tonga Trench in the South Pacific Ocean, is the world's second-deepest known point, reaching a maximum depth of roughly 10,052 metres (32,970 ft).
- The trench was named after the HMS Hossack, which undertook a scientific investigation of it in 1930.
Sirena Deep
- Sirena Deep, also located in the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean, is the world's third-deepest known point, reaching a maximum depth of around 10,065 metres (32,998 ft).
- It is named after the RV Sirena, a scientific research vessel that surveyed the trench in 1960.
Hossack Deep (Puerto Rico Trench)
- This Hossack Deep in the Atlantic Ocean's Puerto Rico Trench is distinct from the one discussed before in the Tonga Trench.
- It is the fourth-deepest known point in the world's seas, reaching a maximum depth of about 8,648 metres (28,373 feet).
Brownson Deep
- Brownson Deep, located in the Izu-Ogasawara Trench of the western Pacific Ocean, is the world's fifth-deepest known point, reaching a maximum depth of around 8,380 metres (27,493 feet).
- It was named after the USS Brownson, which surveyed the trench in 1963.
