FOLD AND TYPES OF FOLD
Earth's rocky layers bend and buckle: Discover folds - anticlines (upward) and synclines (downward) - shaping mountains and valleys.
Folds
- Because the plates are moving horizontally, they put pressure on the rocks that are on the ground. When this force acts on rocks, it makes waves that are called folds.
Types of Folds
- The type of folds that are made depends on many things, like the type of rock, how strong the compressional force is, and so on.
- Based on structure, look, and mathematics, different folds have been named. Here are some of them:
Symmetrical
- In these bends, the central plane is straight up and down, and both limbs slope in the same direction.
- They are made when moderately strong compression forces work on them over and over again.
Asymmetrical Folds
- These are folds that happen when the axial plane is tilted and the anticline's arms dip in different directions.
- If one limb is longer and slopes slightly upward, then the other limb is shorter and slopes steeply upward.
Overturned Fold
- As the axial plane slopes, both arms fall in the same direction but at different angles. This type of fold is known as overtuned fold.
Isoclinal Folds
- These are folds where two limbs dip in the same direction at right angles.
- They form when the forces of compression are so strong that the limbs line up with each other.
Recumbent Fold
- A horizontal vertical line is what makes a recumbent fold unique.
- They form when there are such strong compression forces that the limbs line up straight and flat.
- The Alps have a lot of these horizontal bends.
Chevron Fold
- These are folds that have crests and valleys that are very sharp and angle-shaped.
Fan Fold
- It's called a fan fold when the fold's limbs are turned over so much that it looks like a fan.
Open Fold
- "Open folds" are folds where the angle between two limbs is more than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees.
- In these kinds of folds, the rock beds are all the same thickness along the fold.
- The mild compressional force that makes them is what makes them.
Closed Fold
- Folds with two parts that are not 90 degrees apart are called closed folds.
- More rock is on the sides and less rock is on the tops and bottoms.
- They are made by a strong force of squeezing.
